What is GM’s Ultium Platform?

GM has announced that they will be using a new electric battery in the next generation of their electric vehicles, including the upcoming electric Chevrolet Silverado, called the Ultium Platform. GM continues to fulfill their promise of an all-electric future, and the Ultium Platform is the next step in this vision of a clean future. What is this battery, and what makes it so revolutionary? Let’s take a closer look.
A Revolution in Electric Vehicles
The Ultium Platform is a lithium-ion battery that is designed for use in electric vehicles. The highly flexible Ultium battery makes it scalable to all of GM’s new electric vehicles. It offers many advantages over other types of batteries, including longer life, faster charging times, and higher performance. Future GM electric vehicles powered by the Ultium platform can feature a range of over 300 miles and support all-wheel drive usage.
With the Ultium battery as a foundation, GM can focus on vehicle design instead of working around costly and troublesome traditional engine parts. This means GM electric vehicles will have the same capabilities as gas-powered ones, but with an additional emphasis on aerodynamic, efficient, and stylish designs. Beautiful exterior, spacious interior, great performance, and more are made possible by the Ultium platform!
How is Any of this Possible?
The most brilliant design of the Ultium platform is the modular design of its high-energy cells. These flat cells neatly stack on top of each other, wasting almost no space and allowing engineers to scale the Ultium battery for any and all electric requirements. The Ultium platform will provide support for both every day and performance vehicles thanks to its unique cell shape.
GM is not only committing to an all-electric future with their Ultium platform, but also promising to source safe and ethical raw materials. The Ultium battery uses nickel and manganese to maximize electric range, while reducing expensive cobalt. North America will be the main source of materials for the Ultium battery, with new plants already being established in the United States.
What about charging? GM has you covered with Ultium Charge 360, an end-to-end charging network designed to simplify and streamline the charging process. This will include electric vehicle charging at home, work, and in public. The electric fleet will be able to take advantage of 350-kW fast DC chargers that can provide up to 100 miles of range per ten minutes of charge time.
However, less time charging is always better! This is why GM has equipped the Ultium platform with regenerative braking. When the electric vehicle slows down, the electric motor becomes a generator as kinetic energy is sent back to the battery. Electric vehicle owners can now extend the range of their electric vehicles with minimal effort, all while increasing brake pad life.
