2026 Chevy Traverse vs Ford Explorer: Price, Space, and Specs Compared

The Traverse's advantages are the ones a three-row buyer shops for, and they start at the bottom of the lineup rather than only at the top.

• Cargo room: 98 cubic feet with the rear rows folded, against 85.8 in the Explorer. Both rear rows go flat to get there, so it is the figure to read when the back half of the vehicle is carrying loads rather than people.
• The eighth seat: the Traverse will seat 8, and the Explorer stops at 7 no matter which trim you build. The Traverse reaches 8 with the second-row bench in the LT, which is the least expensive trim in the lineup, so the extra seat is something you choose rather than something you climb the ladder to buy. If you are the parent who ends up driving other people's kids, this is the difference that decides it.
• Standard power: 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft, and that figure does not move from the LT to the RS. On the Explorer side, every four-cylinder trim makes 300 horsepower, so the Traverse holds a 328-to-300 edge wherever the two lineups meet on the standard engine.
• Restraint-system coverage: 6 years or 72,000 miles against Ford's 5 years or 60,000 miles. The bumper-to-bumper and powertrain terms are identical on both sides. Chevrolet comes out ahead here, and on sheet-metal surface corrosion, which Ford does not cover. It matters if you plan to keep the vehicle past the point where powertrain coverage runs out.

The Explorer answers with a lower price of entry, lower running costs, and a higher power ceiling once you climb its trim ladder.

• Entry price: the Active opens at $38,465 at launch where the Traverse LT opens at $40,800. That is an entry-trim advantage rather than a lineup-wide one, because the gap narrows as you climb and the two ranges finish close together at the top. If you are shopping the bottom trim, it is money in your pocket. If you are shopping the top trims, it is close to nothing.
• Fuel economy: 24 MPG combined with rear-wheel drive against the front-wheel-drive Traverse's 22, a 2 MPG gap. It is an entry-and-mid-trim advantage, though: order the V6 or the Tremor and it is gone.
• The 385-horsepower V6: the twin-turbo V6 is standard on the ST and available on the Tremor, and it is more engine than Chevrolet sells in a Traverse at any trim or any price. The cost shows up at the pump, since Ford rates that engine on premium while the Traverse runs on regular.
• Being the smaller vehicle: at 198.7 inches long and 4,312 pounds at the base, the Explorer is the shorter and lighter of the two. It gives up the room the Traverse's size buys, and gets back a vehicle that is easier to park, easier to thread through a full lot, and easier to live with on a narrow street. Carrying less mass is also part of why it uses less fuel.

The Explorer opens lower and runs a longer trim ladder. The Traverse opens higher, then catches up: the two lineups top out close together, $55,400 at launch for the Traverse RS against $54,905 for the Explorer ST. So the real price gap lives at the entry point, not at the top.

Chevrolet sells one engine to every Traverse buyer. Ford sells two. That split cuts both ways: the Traverse out-powers the Explorer's standard engine, while the Explorer's optional V6 out-powers everything here.

Outside the Tremor, the Explorer's four-cylinder is rated 2 MPG better combined than the Traverse's: 24 to 22 in the base drive layout, and 23 to 21 with all four wheels driven.

The Traverse is bigger on the outside and holds more inside. It is longer, wider, and taller, with more wheelbase between the axles.

Both are rated to tow 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. The number is identical; the path to it is not. On the Traverse, the trailering equipment is included. On the Explorer, you order the trailer tow package to get there.

For a 20-foot boat on the St. Johns or a pair of jet skis, either one does the job, so towing should not be the spec that decides this for you.
