Nissan uses a 1.5L VC-Turbo three-cylinder rated at 201 horsepower, more than the 175 horsepower Chevrolet draws from the Equinox's 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder. The Rogue also leads on torque, 225 lb-ft against 184.

The two SUVs are close on the outside. Length is nearly identical, 183.2 inches for the Equinox against 183 for the Rogue, and both seat 5. Chevrolet lists the Equinox two ways, 29.8 behind the seat and 63.5 folded; Nissan lists a single 36.5 figure without stating the seat position, so the two cannot be lined up directly.

With all-wheel drive, the Equinox is rated to tow 1,500 pounds, the same as the Rogue. With front-wheel drive it is rated at 800 pounds. So the towing difference is not really between the two SUVs. It is between the two Equinox drivetrains.

For light loads like a small utility trailer or a pair of jet skis, the Rogue and the all-wheel-drive Equinox sit at the same ceiling. Neither is built for heavy towing.
Each SUV comes with its own standard driver-assistance package, and the two are not the same package. The Equinox includes Chevy Safety Assist on every model, which bundles automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, a following distance indicator, forward collision alert, and IntelliBeam automatic high beams. The Rogue includes Nissan Safety Shield 360 as standard across the lineup. Where the two can be measured the same way is the federal crash rating, and there they do not tie: the Rogue holds a 5-star overall score and the Equinox has not been rated yet.

The Rogue's off-road-styled Rock Creek grade is all-wheel drive only, so it is not an option if you want front-wheel drive. And on the Equinox, all-wheel drive costs you a little gas mileage but raises what the SUV can tow.
